Are you a web host?

CO2Stats Green Site Certification works with your existing web host to make your entire visitor experience green. Specifically, CO2Stats (1) helps to make your site more energy-efficient, and (2) provides your site with automatically-purchased renewable energy (from audited wind and solar farms) each month. CO2Stats software monitors the energy used by your servers, visitors' computers and the networks that connect them in order to calculate how much energy is required to make your site green. You can monitor these calculations in real time by clicking on your Green Certified Site™ badge.

If I already have a "green host," do I need CO2Stats?

Yes. Many green hosts, if they are audited, only make the server on which your website is hosted environmentally-friendly and neglect the carbon emissions due to client and network emissions, which typically constitute the bulk of the carbon emissions produced by your websites.

How do websites contribute to carbon emissions?

Websites are provided by servers and are viewed by clients (visitors' computers) that are connected via networks. These servers, clients and networks all require electricity in order to run, electricity that is largely generated by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. When fossil fuels are burned, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, which contribute to climate change.

How does CO2Stats calculate footprints?

CO2Stats combines a variety of signals, such as the local fuel mixes of computers visiting your site, to calculate the total end-to-end footprint of your site's online experience.

Does the carbon footprint of a website really matter?

Very much so! According to a Gartner study, in 2007, for the first time in history, the carbon emissions due to information and communication technologies exceeded that of the entire aviation industry.

Do I have to pay extra for the green energy purchases?

No. As part of your subscription, CO2Stats automatically purchases renewable energy certificates from third-party wind and solar farms that have had these certificates certified (e.g., under Green-e). That energy gets pumped onto the electrical grid, displacing electricity that otherwise would have been generated by burning fossil fuels.

Do you have a reseller program?

Yes. Many green consultants and design firms purchase our CO2Stats Pro and CO2Stats Premium plans, which support multiple domains, for resale to their clients. All billing is centrally administered by the reseller, and the reseller in turn bills their clients at a price of their choosing. Reseller accounts are mananged in a single, easy-to-use control panel that is fully supported. We'll maintain the network so you don't have to. Check out our solutions page to learn more about opportunities for you.

Do you purchase renewable energy certificates or "carbon offsets"?

CO2Stats purchases renewable energy certificates from third-party renewable energy suppliers, in which the generation of wind and solar energy is subsidized in order to displace electricity generated by non-renewable methods like burning fossil fuels. In contrast, the sale of so-called "carbon offsets" is currently unregulated within the U.S. For this reason, we only purchase RECs and not "carbon offsets."

Does CO2Stats work with websites outside the USA?

Yes! CO2Stats software works on websites hosted all over the world.

What if my site receives more than 5,000,000 page views per month?

CO2Stats often partners with customers whose traffic exceed our largest standard plan. Please contact us to discuss how a custom package can be created to suit your unique requirements.

How do you make a website more energy-efficient?

CO2Stats examines the efficiency of your website's code and then identifies opportunities for streamlining the site to run faster without any visual change to the site itself. By improving your site's energy efficiency, you can save on bandwidth costs and increase customer satisfaction and conversions through faster page load times.

Is CO2Stats easy to use?

CO2Stats is very easy to use! Once you have subscribed, you will receive an email with a link to your private dashboard. There, you can select the custom colors for your Green Certified Site badge so that your badge matches the aesthetic of your site. You will then be able to copy and paste a short snippet of code from your dashboard into the HTML of your website. The process takes less than 60 seconds to complete. If you require assistance, our friendly staff will be more than happy to personally guide you through the process via telephone or email.
