1. How do you calculate the carbon footprint of a website?
We measure the locations of both the clients visiting a website and the servers providing the website, and use publicly available statistics to calculate the local mixes of fuels that were used to generate the electricity that powered those clients and servers. In combination with the client visit times, we are able to estimate the overall in-use electricity and carbon footprints of a website.
2. When will my Renewable Energy Certificates be displayed?
We purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) on the last business day of each month, after we have calculated the precise amount of renewable energy to purchase given your website's unique footprint. Your certificates will be viewable within three (3) business days of our purchase. CO2Stats reserves the right to cap REC purchases in case of excessive use, as its own discretion.
3. Where do you purchase your Renewable Energy Certificates?
We purchase our Renewable Energy Certificates from Sustainable Travel International and Native Energy.
4. How do Renewable Energy Certificates help the environment?
Renewable Energy Certificates guarantee that a certain amount of clean wind and solar electricity will be generated onto the power grid, displacing fossil fuel-based electricity generation.
Since we measure the location and fuel makeup of your users and servers, we are able to purchase an equal amount of renewable energy to offset the non-renewable component of your energy footprint. The more renewable energy we support, the less non-renewable energy will be required in the future.
5. Are your Renewable Energy Certificates certified?
Yes. We purchase Green-E Certified renewable energy certificates.
6. Is CO2Stats a webhosting service?
No. CO2Stats provides easily implementable software that you copy-paste into your website's html so that makes your site carbon neutral regardless of where it is hosted.
7. What will CO2Stats look like on my site?
CO2Stats Pro will appear as a small badge that when clicked will reveal and auditable certificate that displays your renewable energy purchase as well as the data regarding your site's energy consumption. CO2Stats Basic appears as a large badge with a single number just showing the total carbon emissions of your site, and does not include auditable data or renewable energy certificates.
8. Do you purchase Renewable Energy Certificates for CO2Stats Free?
Yes, but only for the first hundred impressions of the widget each month.
